Use fuel and gas safely at home and on the road

Practical guidance on the products we sell: spotting a gas leak, storing kerosene and refuelling safely.

If you smell gas

Cooking gas (LPG)

  • Do not switch lights or appliances on or off, and do not use a phone near the cylinder.
  • Open windows and doors, turn the cylinder valve off if you can do so safely, and move everyone outside.
  • To check a connection, brush soapy water over it: bubbles mean a leak. Never use a flame to look for a leak.
  • Store cylinders upright in a ventilated area, away from heat and direct sunlight, and never in a closed car or a basement.
  • Replace hoses and regulators on time, and don't use a cylinder that is dented, rusted or damaged.
  • Keep the valve closed when the gas is not in use.
Store it safely

Kerosene

  • Store kerosene only in clean, labelled, sealed containers, out of children's reach.
  • Never keep it in drink bottles, which is a common cause of poisoning.
  • Keep it away from heat and flames, and never siphon it by mouth.
  • If someone swallows kerosene, get medical help straight away and do not make them vomit.
At the pump

Petrol and diesel

  • Switch off your engine while refuelling, and don't smoke or use naked flames near the pump.
  • Never ask for petrol to be put into bottles or unlabelled containers.
  • Carry fuel containers upright, with the cap tight.
